Gene McEver - University of Tennessee - 1928In the photo above, Bristol, Virginia High School graduate and the University of Tennessee's first All-American, Gene "The Wild Bull" McEver, secures his place in Vol history. Receiving the opening kick-off against Alabama, he returns it straight up the middle, 98 yards for a touchdown. Later in the game, he caught a touchdown pass and virtually beat Alabama himself as the Vols upset the heavily favored Crimson Tide, 15-13. Beattie Feathers - Chicago Bears - 1934
Bristol, Virginia High School graduate and University of Tennessee star, Beattie "Big Chief" Feathers, picks up yardage as he becomes the first player in the NFL to rush for more than 1000 yards in a single season. His lead blocker, number 3, is NFL Hall of Fame member Bronko Nagurski. For more information about Feathers, visit our Hall of Heroes page. The historical significance of Southwest Virginia's contributions to American football from high school through the NFL is nothing short of extraordinary. A continuous thread is woven throughout the fabric that is football as we know it today.
"Bullet Bill" Dudley, the former ace running back from Graham High School at Bluefield, Virginia, became the University of Virginia's first concensus All-American. The photo above was taken in the 1941 game with North Carolina. Playing at Chapel Hill, Dudley accounted for all 28 points by: completing a 67-yard pass for the first touchdown, scoring on a 60 yard end run, ran for an 89 yard touchdown on a fake punt play, and drove three yards up the middle for his third TD. Further, he called the offensive signals, handled the punting (averaging 42 yards); threw passes gaining 117 yards, carried the ball from scrimmage for 215 yards, and played defense where he made several tough tackles; and intercepted one pass! The Southwest Virginia Touchdown Club, Inc was organized in December of 2009. Former members of the 1964 Virginia All-Star football team, reunited after forty-five years, decided to promote high school football in the region. A member of the 64' team, Fred Selfe, had become something of a legend for his character and integrity at Emory & Henry College. He was an inspiration to literally thousands of students, coaches and co-workers during his life. The organization today is based on his concepts of life and we have launched a number of projects to help benefit the heritage and history of Southwest Virginia.
