"Bullet Bill" Dudley - University of Virginia - 1942
"Bullet Bill" Dudley, an ace running back from Graham High School at Bluefield, Virginia, became the University of Virginia's first consensus All-American. This photo was taken in the 1941 Virginia - North Carolina game. Playing at Chapel Hill, Dudley accounted for all 28 points by: completing a 67-yard pass for the first touchdown, scoring on a 60 yard end run, scoring on an 89 yard touchdown run on a fake punt play, and driving three yards up the middle for his fourth TD. He called the offensive signals, handled the punting (averaging 42 yards); passed for 117 yards, and had a total 215 yards rushing. He also played defense where he made 12 tackles and intercepted a pass. For more information about Dudley, visit our Hall of Heroes page.
The Southwest Virginia Touchdown Club, Inc was organized in December of 2009. Former members of the 1964 Virginia All-Star football team, reunited after forty-five years, decided to promote high school football in the region. A member of the 64' team, Fred Selfe, had become something of a legend for his character and integrity at Emory & Henry College. He was an inspiration to literally thousands of students, coaches and co-workers during his life. The organization today is based on his concepts of life and we have launched a number of projects to help benefit the heritage and history of Southwest Virginia.
